THE PRELUDE: West coast breaking the ceiling in girls basketball
By LaQuita Thompson

Anaheim, CA -The west coast hoops scene is no joke, y’all. From the playgrounds of LA to the hardwood of the Pac-12, Cali has been a hotbed of hoop dreams for decades and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. It’s a place where the competition is fierce, the trash talk is nonstop, and the love for the game is unmatched. And that passion translates to the next level too, with west coast colleges consistently churning out top tier talent that goes on to make noise in the league. I mean, just look at the Ogwumike sisters, Nneka and Chiney, who dominated at Stanford before becoming perennial WNBA All-Stars. Or Kelsey Plum, the Pac-12’s all-time leading scorer who’s now lighting it up for the Las Vegas Aces. The list goes on and on, from Diana Taurasi to Candace Parker to Sue Bird, all west coast products who changed the game forever. And with the next generation of Cali girls already making waves, like Breya Cunningham, Jada Williams, Juju Watkins, and Kiki Rice it’s clear the pipeline ain’t drying up anytime soon. So while the rest of the country may sleep on the west, real ones know what’s up. California basketball is a force to be reckoned with, period.
As a die-hard sports fanatic, I was thrilled to attend the HYPE HER HOOPS showcase featuring some of the most talented young female basketball players in the 5th to 8th grade age range. From the moment I stepped into the gym, I could feel the electric atmosphere and the palpable excitement emanating from the players, coaches, and spectators alike. What I witnessed on the court absolutely blew me away. These girls displayed a level of skill, athleticism, and basketball IQ that was well beyond their years. Their crisp passes, smooth ball-handling, deadly shooting, and tenacious defense had me rubbing my eyes in disbelief, wondering if I was actually watching middle schoolers or a group of seasoned high school stars. Even more impressive than the on-court action was the phenomenal job done by the event organizers and staff. The attention to detail, professionalism, and hospitality they showed was truly top-notch. From the pristine condition of the facilities to the well-designed event schedule to the courteous and helpful staff, every aspect was executed flawlessly. Hats off to the director and team at HYPE HER HOOPS for putting on an incredible showcase that not only highlighted the immense talent of these young female athletes, but also provided them with a platform to shine and further their development both on and off the court. I left the event thoroughly impressed and already looking forward to next year’s edition, eager to see how these rising stars will progress and elevate their games to even greater heights.
