Thompson is from Morton, Texas, where she participated in all sports and was a member of the '86-'87 First Girls State Championship Basketball team as a freshman at Morton High School. LaQuita received such honors as MVP, Best Hustler, Best Free-Throw Percentage and The Best All Around Female Athlete and attended the Track State Meet, competing in the Shot-put.
She graduated from Abilene Christian University and continued her basketball career with the Lady Wildcats attending the NCAA Division II tournament twice and receiving her Bachelor’s in Biology. She attended the WNBA's Detroit Shock try-out camp in its first year and the ABL training camp in the early 90's. Later she played in a Semi-Professional Basketball league, WUBA, with the Houston Blaze, until a recurring knee injury ended her career as a player.
She is a certified science teacher with the Board of Education in Texas and taught Integrated Physics and Chemistry for six years. She is a member of NACA. She is also a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and a member of WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association).
LaQuita is the first female coach in the Fort Bend Independent School District and in the State of Texas to coach high school boy’s basketball at Hightower High School. While at Hightower, LaQuita was one of the contributing coaches helping a beginning boy’s program appear at the State Final Four Finalist State Basketball Tournament in Austin, TX, two consecutive years. Her Sophomore boy’s basketball team during 2003 won the District Championship, losing only one game by one point. Some of those players graduated and attended such colleges as Jarvis Christian University , UNLV, The University Of Houston , Sam Houston, Texas Southern, Cedar Valley College, and Stephen F. Austin among others.Additionally, she was the scouting coordinator for the program and coached the freshman and sophomore boy’s teams. She was also the head varsity cheerleading coach while at Hightower. Her squad received The Best Camp Cheer Squad Award and many individual All-Star Cheer Awards, including the Best Mascot and Coach’s Award.
