RCS GIRLS KICK OFF CLASSIC
By LaQuita Thompson

Houston, TX – Preseason has arrived, and the girls’ basketball scene in Houston is set for another exciting year. This weekend, RCS kicked off the season with its annual classic at Delmar Stadium, showcasing four games that brought together some of the city’s finest talent under one roof.
The final game of the day lived up to all our expectations, featuring two of Houston’s premier girls’ programs: Kinkaid and Summer Creek. Both teams are powerhouses with a wealth of playoff and state experience, guided by two exceptional coaches who are deeply committed to their players’ development. The matchup was thrilling, showcasing an uptempo style of play, aggressive rebounding, intense defense, and prolific scoring. Each roster boasted talented athletes, including several Division 1 prospects, making for an electrifying contest that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
This game was truly unpredictable, with the outcome hanging in the balance until the final moments. The intensity escalated as both teams exchanged points and momentum, creating a thrilling back-and-forth experience. Kinkaid boasts a talented roster, highlighted by Ma’Ryiah Alfred at the point guard position. Her athleticism, agility with the ball, and sharp basketball IQ make her a standout player. With a reliable mid-range jumper and the ability to read the game effectively, she undoubtedly possesses the skills of a Power 5 prospect.
Lauryn Hull stands out as a key player on Kinkaid’s roster, showcasing her skills as a 5-9 junior guard. With an explosive first step, she poses a significant challenge for defenders, combining finesse and composure with a remarkable floater. Her strength allows her to finish effectively around the rim, using either hand.
While defense may not be the primary focus here, it’s important to note that the entire team, including Summer Creek, plays with a tough, hard-nosed defensive mentality.
Transitioning to another standout, Sydney Marshall, a 5-10 junior guard/forward, may be considered undersized for her position, but she more than compensates with her tenacity. She excels on the boards, consistently drives to the basket, and thrives in physical play, often emerging victorious in those confrontations. Her aggressive style and intensity are evident from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
Alex Gordon, a 6-1 junior forward, may be undersized, but her tenacity sets her apart on the court. She possesses a knack for sneaky plays that often catch opponents off guard. Her strength and hustle shine through, especially when it comes to securing rebounds. Gordon excels at sealing off her defender, allowing her to finish effectively around the rim. When she, along with her teammates, is firing on all cylinders, they become a formidable force. Additionally, the team boasts several reserves who can step in and make a significant impact, further enhancing their competitiveness.
The start of the game suggested that Kinkaid might overpower the defending state champions, Summer Creek, but anyone familiar with the Lady Dawgs knows they never back down easily. They clawed their way back into the match, showcasing a relentless, aggressive defense that pressured their opponents from every corner of the court. This persistence in defense sparked a comeback in the second half, ultimately leading to a nail-biting finish. The game concluded with a crucial turnover that sealed the victory for Summer Creek, ending the contest at 52-49.
The Summer Creek Dawgs are spearheaded by senior guard Kennedy Simpson, a dynamic 5-10 lefty known for her ability to slip past defenders and score effortlessly. With a reliable three-point shot and strong leadership on the court, she consistently makes an impact.
Complementing her is 5-5 sophomore guard Ty’Asia Young, who poses a significant threat from beyond the arc, having drained three consecutive three-pointers early in the game. Young’s quickness and defensive doggedness make her a formidable opponent, while her exceptional court vision allows her to create opportunities for herself and her teammates. Despite her smaller stature, she skillfully leans into contact to finish strong inside, proving that she is a force to be reckoned with.
Another standout player is 5-6 junior guard Addison Martin. She possesses an impressive ability to score from both inside and outside the paint. The training she receives clearly emphasizes finishing through contact, as Addison excels at leaning into defenders to complete plays around the rim with either hand. Her skill in creating space allows her to either drive past opponents or take a jump shot effectively. Additionally, she is known for her tenacious defense, making her a well-rounded asset on the court.
This was an exciting way to kick off the season. It’s a shame that a rematch between these two teams won’t occur, as Kinkaid is a private school with a different schedule. Summer Creek is likely to secure a high seed for the 6A playoffs, and I believe both teams have a solid chance of reaching their respective state tournaments.
