Mid Season Player updates
Girls basketball in Houston is blazing with talent and the season so far is off to a rocket start. Rival teams going head to head and top players making it even more competitive. Districts are on fire and recognized players are setting school records and reaching some of high school’s most memorable accolades. When lists of the ranked or selected players is spreading around social media, one of the first things I find myself doing is searching state by state to compare the numbers. It doesn’t surprise me one bit when I see over half of the list being represented by Texas players, especially on the girls side. This week the McDonald’s All-American selections were made and the nominees included 20 plus players from Texas, the most out of any other state. The roster itself is loaded with some of Texas most sought after girls talent and again representing in high numbers. The same is true with the Naismith girls high school player of the year watch list. People ask me all the time what are we doing here in Texas, and I just say “everything is bigger in Texas.” I love it!
That’s one of the reasons why I was compelled to start this blog and do live broadcasts of local girls games. There is so much talent that surrounds me and I think it’s important to help some get out of the shadows. Today I want to highlight some of the players that I have watched in the past couple of weeks, and if you missed any of our live broadcasts you can still catch up through JErnest Media LLC Live Stream.
I’ll start with the eagles of Barbers Hill. One of the most competitive and intense games I’ve covered so far was the Dayton vs Barbers Hill game. It was lively with the school band, cheerleaders, and excited hometown fans all shouting with team spirit. Dayton’s Tayelin Grays 2018 5-9 Gexhibited more of her talent and gave her all in this game. I’ve covered Tayelin before but this game I really saw how athletic she is. She is able to score in traffic, she also has a very nice vertical leap. She uses her speed to go coast to coast and get steals on defense. She and her partner in crime Londan Mallet2017 5-11 P work really well together. Mallet displayed her ability to shoot and take some 3-pt open shots and handle the ball. I don’t have to introduce Charli Collier 2018 6-4 F/P from Barbers Hill. I’ve been able to watch her in two games so far this season and it’s great to see her moving so good up and down the court. She’s doing a good job attacking off of the key with her jabs and head fakes to the basket. She is finishing strong, blocking shots, pulling down rebounds, and making her presence known. A quality player and person. UCONN is getting a good one no doubt in Collier.
Barbers Hill also has some good shooters on the team. I was impressed with #24 Kayla Konarik guard ability. She is a killa behind the 3 pt. arc and you can bet top dollar on her making it 50% of the time. I like her intensity on the guard, she can handle the ball, moves constantly without the ball and she’s able to get that shot up quickly. I look forward to watching more of her. #22 Jaclyn Dobson is another one of their guards who can shoot the 3 ball. She comes through right when they need her to, good range also. Then you also have #30 Madison Armer and #11 Logan Keene who contribute to the numbers for Barbers Hill. The one thing they all do is move without the ball, cutting, setting picks, and making back door mid-range shots look easy. An overall good team chemistry.

Next up on my girls review week is #21 Briauna Johnson2019 G from Crosby High School. Now this young player not only has swag but she can ball. She is jet quick, a good vertical at 5-5, very good shooter and has good handles. The one thing that I really like about this kid is her IQ. I think she has a huge upside and will be another one of Houston’s greats if she continues to work hard and climb the ladder. She’s supported with another teammate in #24 Paris Netherly 2018 F. Netherly is strong underneath the basket. She uses her body and strength to pull down rebounds, and good footwork to score. She will also take perimeter shots but her go to thing is getting to the hoop. Very nice ability.
