Houston, TX – One of the most outstanding women’s basketball players to emerge from Lubbock, Texas, is already making waves at her new institution in Oklahoma. I must admit, I felt a tinge of disappointment when she chose to play for Oklahoma instead of Texas Tech, as I envisioned her journey as a local hero would create a truly magical experience for all of us in West Texas. Growing up in Morton, Texas, which is located approximately 60 miles west of Lubbock, I fondly remember the excitement of attending Red Raiders games. For children from a small town, witnessing college athletes in action was incredibly inspiring, particularly when facing formidable opponents like the University of Texas, which boasted talents such as Clarissa Davis and Fran Harris. The thrill of seeing these role models up close left a lasting impression on us, fueling our dreams and aspirations in the world of sports.
Her impact on high school girls’ basketball in Texas has been nothing short of revolutionary, as she shattered existing records and established new benchmarks that had previously seemed unattainable. She went to Monterey High School averaged 32pts per game . With an unparalleled blend of poise and confidence, she dominated the court, earning the title of the top player in the state and securing the coveted MVP award. Her scoring prowess set a new standard, as she amassed more points than any other player in the history of girls’ basketball. The excitement she generated drew unprecedented crowds to her games, often resulting in sell-out events with standing-room-only attendance. This surge in popularity not only highlighted her exceptional talent but also shone a spotlight on other aspiring female athletes, increasing their chances of recognition and recruitment. Her accolades, including being named a McDonald’s All-American, the Naismith Player of the Year, and a participant in the Jordan Brand Classic, are a testament to her extraordinary achievements. Through her remarkable journey, she has instilled a sense of pride in West Texas, inspiring a new generation of athletes to pursue their dreams.
I am genuinely thrilled to follow her journey, regardless of which college she chooses to attend. Her dynamic playing style and infectious energy make her a joy to watch and support. There is an undeniable charisma about her that captivates fans, and it is clear that Oklahoma has secured a remarkable talent in her. Alongside Beers, Verhulst, and Lofton she is poised to make a significant impact on the women’s college basketball landscape this season, showcasing their skills in a way that has not been seen before. In fact, their impressive performances have already begun to turn heads during the pre-season, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead.
Aaliyah has already secured a spot on the prestigious Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, positioning herself as a leading contender for the title of the best freshman point guard in women’s college basketball this season. She joins a youthful roster that features seven out of eleven players who are either freshmen or sophomores, reflecting a significant shift in the team’s dynamics. Following the departure of five seniors and three additional players who entered the transfer portal, Aaliyah steps into a program that is currently ranked sixth in the nation and is projected to finish fourth in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). With the infusion of new talent this season, the team is well-equipped to make a substantial impact on their journey toward an NCAA championship, showcasing the potential for growth and success in the competitive landscape of college basketball.
