Dayton vs Humble Varsity girls basketball Live Stream coverage
Tuesday December 12, 2016 set the stage for what turned out to be quite a game in Houston’s varsity girls basketball early competition. This also marked our first live stream broadcast game covering play by play action, and it was full of action. Many times I am approached by coaches and parents to watch players, evaluate players, get players on the radar and sometimes its an accurate observation while other times it’s a miscalculation to say the least. In this case it was on point 100%.
Initially my eyes and ears were set to watch a talentedTayelin Grays, 5-10 G, with the Dayton Broncos but I was very pleased to see that the game actually showcased some pretty good girls’ talent overall on both teams. Grays and her partner in crime, senior post Londan Mallet 5-11 P, were absolutely fun to watch. They make a great duo.
Tayelin is an athletic young lady, very strong, loves to beat her defender off the dribble, she runs the floor exceptionally well and many of her points come from the long pass which she executes into easy lay-ups. She doesn’t shy away from contact, in fact she thrives off of it. One thing I really love about her game is that she works just as hard underneath getting rebounds and second shots, creating fouls and making it to the charity line. She has impeccable timing which leads to block shots on her part and opportunities for quick transition basketball.
Tayelin is a hard nose defender, she digs into her opponent and if you’re not a strong ball-handler she will definitely end up with a steal. She uses her speed well which allows her to push the ball up court with a quickness and by the time the other team reaches her she has already scored! Something that most guards have a difficult time doing is FEEDING THE BIG MAN!!!!!!! I can’t tell you how many times a week we discuss this and how often we emphasize this with our players. Entry passes into the post is a vital component to good offenses or at least good execution of offensive schemes. This happens to be one of Taylin’s strong points, she does a very good job at feeding her post Londan Mallet, who also impressed me with some of post moves and footworkability down low. Batman and Robin as I call this Duo
Londan Mallet is a senior post and I liked her ability in the paint. She does something that a lot of post players, well in girls high school basketball, don’t do and that is SEALING THE POST DEFENDER off hard and long enough to receive the pass. She was able to get most of her looks underneath simply because she does the work first of pinning down her man, and demand the ball with her off hand! She does a good job also at stepping into the lead pass to finish the shot. I also noticed that she is able to handle the basketball, she wasn’t intimidated in bringing the ball up court if she had to. She fights for position offensively and defensively pulling down rebounds getting those second shots.
Dayton also has some role players who do a great job using their speed to penetrate the paint causing the defense to collapse most of the time. They also have some 3 pt. shooters like senior guardAlexis Trousdale 5-2 G. She didn’t have a spectacular game but I was able to see that shooting is her thing, she will take those open 3-pt looks and most times will knock them down.
Humble girls has a good senior super star on hand by the name ofKarrington Donald 5-7 G, who has committed to University of Texas San Antonio. She is another strong guard here in Houston Texas. She runs the perimeter looking for the open opportunity to penetrate the paint, and she will beat slower defenders off of the dribble with ease. She will also shoot the ball, nice range in the 3-pt. She is tough on defense, her against Tayelin Grays was a perfect match-up. I would love to see them in a 1 on 1 match! Donald is Humble’s go to player and she has proven herself to be worthy of such a big role. She is a scorer and has a scorer’s mind-set.
Morgan Singleton, 5-11 P was another good contributor on Humble’s squad. She came off the bench and she did well in using her body to cause havoc getting rebounds or looks down low. She did a descent job going against Dayton’s Londan Mallet. She really made a difference in the second half of the game with getting rebounds and creating fouls for herself to get to the free-throw.
Nesaiha Brooks 5-7 G is a senior guard with Humble. She is another guard who loves to penetrate to the paint, she loves to come off the baseline corner and finish. She will also take some Steph Curry 3-pt shots!!! I bet that’s one of her favorite players because some of her exhibition on the court resembles him.
Kiara Williams 5-4 G is quick and hard to keep up with. She is strong on defense, active and will cause steals. She is one that will use her quickness and beat her defenders to the basket. She will pressure the ball full court and make her opponents either pick up their dribble or lose it in traffic, very good defender.
This game was close from start to finish. Both teams played with great energy and intensity. Great competition in girls basketball.
