Houston, TX – The conference season has officially kicked off, showcasing the excitement of Big 12 women’s basketball on New Year’s Eve. The University of Houston welcomed Iowa State, featuring the rising star and fan favorite, Audi Crooks, who has captured the attention of basketball enthusiasts this season.
The Lady Cougars entered the game with determination, demonstrating their skill in ball movement and solid defensive play. Despite their hard work and commitment, they struggled to contain the formidable duo of Jada Williams and Audi Crooks, who proved to be a relentless challenge on the court.
Both teams appeared evenly matched on the stat sheets, but nothing could overshadow Crooks’ remarkable 35-point performance. She certainly had support, particularly from her dynamic teammate, Jada Williams, who delivered an impressive 14 assists during the game. While assists are Williams’ forte, achieving such a high number in a single match is still a noteworthy accomplishment.
The first half of the game was closely contested, with both teams striving to find their rhythm. Houston’s TK Pitts stood out with her relentless energy, dominating both ends of the court. Her aggressive drives to the basket and tenacious defense resulted in an impressive 11 rebounds, the highest on her team. Notably, she outperformed Crooks in total rebounds, showcasing her exceptional performance.
Audi Crooks is an exciting player to watch, making significant contributions to women’s basketball. Currently a top scorer, she has achieved impressive milestones and is carving out her own unique space in the sport. With several games scoring over 30 points, her talent is undeniable.
Beyond her athletic prowess, many may not realize that she is also exceptionally intelligent and a genuinely kind individual. While she dominates on the court, she serves as an excellent ambassador for the game, fully grasping the dynamics of playing within a close-knit team like Iowa State.
Houston struggled to contain her inside, as she excelled at sealing off her defender and finishing strong at the rim. Kyndall Hunter made an impact by hitting a three-pointer, while Briana Peguero led the scoring with 14 points. Kierra Merchant returned to her role as point guard, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against Iowa. However, one thing is clear: Coach Wright and his Lady Cougars are showing steady improvement with each game. There’s still plenty of hope early in the conference season, especially with him at the helm.
Even Crooks remarked on the Lady Cougars’ distinctive style of play, describing it as “streetball” and unpredictable. The game was an exciting spectacle, and as the season progresses, it promises to become even more thrilling. The Cougars are gearing up for their next challenge with an upcoming road trip to Oklahoma State and then Kansas State at home.
