By LaQuita Thompson
Houston, TX – The annual classic girls basketball tournament took place over the weekend, marked by a special tribute to Coach Peggy Whitley, a dedicated figure at Clear Creek High School for 25 years.
During the event at Butler Gym, the court was named in her honor, celebrating her significant contributions to the sport. Former players, colleagues, coaches, and family members gathered to pay homage to her extraordinary legacy and enduring influence on the community.
The tournament features some of the most esteemed girls’ programs in Houston, fostering a sense of tradition and rivalry among participating schools. This competition ignites a fierce contest for the trophy, evident in several of the matches I observed, where the intensity of the games underscored the significance of the event.
Barber’s Hill has reestablished its prominence in girls’ basketball over the past few years, a resurgence that can be traced back to the influence of Charli Collier, a standout at the University of Texas and a first-round pick in the WNBA. Since her departure, the program has consistently competed at a high level, showcasing a new generation of talented players who have made significant contributions to its success.
Jayci Lackey, a 6-1 junior guard, showcases exceptional passing skills and adept ball handling, even in crowded situations. Her defensive acumen is complemented by a graceful playing style that exudes confidence. Capable of scoring both inside and from the perimeter, she demonstrates impressive footwork and a high basketball IQ.
Pearland has consistently ranked among Houston’s elite teams in recent years. Although their current roster may not be as formidable as in previous seasons, they continue to exhibit a competitive spirit that could catch opponents off guard. This resilience is further bolstered by their dedicated and passionate coaching staff, which plays a crucial role in their ongoing success.
The team employs a tenacious defensive strategy while demonstrating patience on offense, focusing on ball movement to set up their perimeter shooters. Anita Nwosu, a 5-10 sophomore playing small forward, adds valuable height for rebounding and possesses the ability to make mid-range jump shots, along with being a capable passer.
Meanwhile, Melena Guerra, a 5-6 junior guard, is a threat from beyond the arc when left unguarded; she also excels in making sound decisions with the ball and effectively relocating to create open scoring opportunities.
Tycee Thibeaux, a 5-5 senior guard, is an essential component of her team, providing stability and cohesion. With her keen court vision, she consistently makes intelligent passes that enhance team dynamics. Capable of scoring both at the rim and from beyond the arc, she poses a dual threat to opponents. As the floor general, Thibeaux effectively orchestrates the game, ensuring that her teammates are well-positioned and engaged throughout.
Cy Woods possesses a remarkable talent in Gianna Hayes, a 6-1 sophomore forward who has captured my admiration over the weekend. Her strength is evident as she dominates the paint, utilizing her body effectively while showcasing solid defensive skills.
Hayes exhibits impressive mobility and a keen understanding of the game, allowing her to post up and score with finesse. Her footwork is commendable, and she consistently finishes strong around the rim, making her a formidable presence on the court.
North Shore boasts a promising talent in Kobe Johnson, a senior guard. Having observed her development since the seventh grade, it was clear from the outset that she would evolve into a formidable player. Johnson excels at driving to the basket, scoring from the perimeter, and demonstrating strong rebounding and defensive skills.
Shadow Creek faced a challenging matchup against Hitchcock, yet the team has demonstrated a strong performance overall. Courtland Cloud, a 6-0 junior guard, stands out as a Division 1 prospect.
Her athleticism, scoring ability, and skills as a ball handler and distributor are noteworthy. With an impressive vertical leap, she makes significant contributions on both offense and defense. Additionally, she has earned recognition as a top player in Texas by the McDonald American Committee and ESPN HoopGurlz’s Jason Key. Cloud is certainly a player to watch throughout the season, as her talent is exceptional.
Hightower demonstrated remarkable determination throughout the tournament, ultimately reaching the championship match against Hitchcock. The game proved to be thrilling, culminating in a dramatic finish at the buzzer. Although the Lady Canes faced a challenging defeat, it is important to recognize their resilience in overcoming a ten-point deficit. This team is currently undergoing a transition, marked by recent roster changes, yet they consistently exhibit a fighting spirit in every competition.
Eryn Roberts Jr. point guard, showcases an impressive floater runner and excels as a three-point shooter. Her tenacious defensive play makes her an essential component of the team’s success.
Sydney Thomas, a senior guard, delivered an outstanding performance during the game. She showcased her shooting prowess by sinking multiple three-pointers, demonstrating her exceptional skill and intensity on both offense and defense. Notably, her strength lies in her catch-and-shoot ability, particularly from beyond the arc, where she consistently makes deep shots.
Samyra Blount, a senior guard, is a dynamic and aggressive player on the team. She skillfully drives to the basket, demonstrating the ability to finish with both her left and right hands.
In addition to her offensive prowess, she is a formidable defender. Notably, her footwork with the ball stands out; she effectively employs jabs and fakes to create opportunities and navigate through defenses.
Ogechi Okeke, a 6-foot-4 junior center/forward ranked 19th by ESPN, stands out as the premier player in the city and is attracting attention from colleges nationwide.

The 2025 Peggy Whitley Chmpions goes to Hitchcock. This is a gritty team that fight. They had a battle with the Hightower Lady Canes. They got a lead and held it until late in 4th quarter.
Taryl Jones Jr. G/F works to finish around the rim . She will knock down the short jumper and She’ll move and groove to bring down rebounds and find ways to get points in the hoop.
VAsia Farris is a small guard but one thing is for certain you better not leave her wide open because she will knock it down.
Slyiah Johnson, a senior guard, played a pivotal role in securing victory with just six seconds left on the clock. She executed a remarkable deep three-pointer that put her team ahead by one point, clinching the championship.
